Carpal Tunnel Syndrome
Physiotherapy involving neurodynamics therapy (exercises to mobilise nerves) helps relieve the symptoms of a common wrist condition, carpal tunnel syndrome (CTS)
CTS can cause pain, pins and needles, sensory changes and weakness in the hand, fingers and wrist. The median nerve is compressed as it passes through the carpal tunnel in the wrist.
Risk factors for CTS include:-
- Wrist fracture or dislocation
- Sex (women are at more risk of getting CTS as the carpal tunnel area is relatively smaller in women than in men)
- Diabetes
- Inflammatory conditions such as rheumatoid arthritis
-Obesity
- Fluid retention during pregnancy and menopause (fluid causes compression on the median nerve in the carpal tunnel)
- Workplace factors (working with vibrating tools)
