Bone density myths and Osteoporosis management implications.

Really interesting article by Dr Chris Leib who states that a low bone mineral density (BMD) score on a DEXA scan isn’t the only predictor of future fracture risk. In his article (see link below) he addresses several commonly held myths:-

Myth 1 - A low bone density score automatically means a high risk of fracture

Myth 2 - Bone density is the primary goal in osteoporosis management

Myth 3 - If the patient can’t gain weight, they’re doomed to fragile bones

Myth 4 - Strong bones are built by pills and milk alone

He concludes future fracture risk reduction should be individualised and focus on:-

  1. Increasing lean muscle mass

  2. Increasing strenth-to-bodyweight ratio

  3. Learning to fall well

  4. improve movement patterns - ability to squat, push, pull and carry
