‘Shin splints’ - Medial Tibial Stress Syndrome
Do your shins throb and ache after you exercise?
It could be shin splints. Your GP may call it medial tibial stress syndrome. It is due to stress on the shin bone (tibia) and the connective tissues that attach the muscles to the bone. The tissues become inflamed and painful.
It can be exacerbated by:-
1. Flat feet - as you walk/run your foot's arch collapses over-pronation)
2. Shoes that don’t fit well or provide good support
3. Exercising without sufficient warmup or cool down stretches
4. Weak ankles, hips, and/or core muscles
You should rest your body. It needs time to heal.
Ice your shin to ease pain and swelling. Do it for 20-30 minutes every 3 to 4 hours for 2 to 3 days, or until the pain is gone.
Physiotherapy can help with stretches and strengthening exercises.
